Jerusalem Old City Itinerary: A One-Day Walking Plan
This Jerusalem Old City itinerary walks you through all four quarters in one day, in an order that fits the site hours rather than fights them. The Old City covers only 0.9 square kilometres, so the distances are short and the plan is realistic on foot. You get a full-day route, a half-day version, the sights that cost nothing, and a note on when a guided walk such as one of the Jerusalem Old City tours is worth booking. The bookable tours are compared on tours of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Quick answer The plan in brief
A one-day Jerusalem Old City itinerary works because the walled city is only 0.9 square kilometres: start at the Temple Mount for the 7:30 morning window, then the Western Wall, the Jewish Quarter, the Via Dolorosa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and end in the Armenian Quarter when St James Cathedral opens its short daily 15:00 slot.
Key takeaways
- Follow the full day phase by phase in the one-day itinerary, built around the Temple Mount morning hours and St James at 15:00.
- Short on time? The half-day version covers the Western Wall, the Via Dolorosa and the Holy Sepulchre.
- Several major sights are free. See the full list in what costs nothing.
- Prefer a guide for part of the day? The 4-hour Old City walking tour from Jaffa Gate costs $57 per person.
One Day in the Old City
Six phases in order. The order matters more than the clock: the Temple Mount only admits non-Muslim visitors in short windows, and St James Cathedral opens for just 30 minutes each afternoon.
-
Early morning
Temple Mount through the Mughrabi Gate
Go first, because the window is short. The Christian Information Center's list gives non-Muslim visiting as Sunday to Thursday only, 7:30 to 11:00 and 13:30 to 14:30 in summer, and 7:30 to 10:00 and 12:30 to 13:30 in winter. The site is closed to visitors on Friday and Saturday, and entry can close at any time without notice. Foreign visitors enter from the Western Wall plaza through the Mughrabi Gate, the only gate for non-Muslims among the eleven gates of the platform. Expect airport-style security and carry your passport. Women need knee-length skirts or trousers with covered arms and chest, men trousers below the knee. Non-Muslims cannot enter the Dome of the Rock or Al-Aqsa Mosque, and non-Muslim prayer and religious items are prohibited. Read the full rules on the Temple Mount page.
-
Early morning
Western Wall plaza
Come down from the Mughrabi Gate and you are already at the Western Wall. The exposed prayer section is about 57 m of a wall that runs 488 m in total, and the lower seven courses date to around 19 BCE. The plaza is open all day, every day of the year. The Western Wall Heritage Foundation gives the walk from Jaffa Gate or Zion Gate as 15 to 20 minutes. Prayer areas are separated by gender. Eating, smoking and lighting candles are not allowed, and on Shabbat the Foundation asks visitors not to take pictures. Details in the Western Wall guide.
-
Mid-morning
Jewish Quarter and the Cardo
Walk into the Jewish Quarter. The restored Cardo was laid out around 120 to 130 CE and extended in the 6th century, and its original pavement lies several metres below the present street. Pass the Broad Wall, an 8th-century BCE fortification, the Hurva Synagogue rebuilt in 2010 about 24 m to the top of its dome, and the Batei Mahse complex of 1860 to 1890. The Jerusalem Archaeological Park and Davidson Center charges ₪40 for adults and ₪22 for children, students, soldiers and Israeli seniors, and a guided tour there costs ₪55 per adult and ₪45 per child with entrance included.
-
Midday
Ramparts Walk or lunch detour
Both ramparts promenades start at Jaffa Gate. A ticket costs ₪25 for adults and ₪12 for students, retirees, children and soldiers. The Southern Promenade runs over the Armenian and Jewish quarters to Zion Gate, the Northern Promenade over the Christian and Muslim quarters through New Gate and Damascus Gate to Herod's Gate. The walk is not wheelchair accessible. If you would rather save the walls for another day, the Austrian Hospice at Via Dolorosa 37 has Cafe Triest, open daily 10:00 to 22:00, and its rooftop terrace charges ₪5 and is open daily 10:00 to 22:00.
-
Afternoon
Via Dolorosa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
The Via Dolorosa runs about 600 m from near the former Antonia Fortress in the Muslim Quarter to the church, with nine stations in the streets and the last five in or beside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Entry to the church is generally free. It is open 5:00 to 20:45 in summer, closing 20:00 in October, and 4:00 to 19:00 in winter, closing 19:30 in March. A daily procession starts at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter. Inside, the Stone of Unction sits just past the entrance and the Aedicule encloses the traditional tomb, restored in 2016 to 2017.
-
Afternoon
St James Cathedral at 15:00
Head into the Armenian Quarter in time for the short daily opening. The Cathedral of St James is open Monday to Friday and Sunday 6:30 to 7:30, Saturday 6:30 to 10:00, and daily 15:00 to 15:30, so the 15:00 half hour is the practical slot for most visitors. The cathedral was complete by the 12th century and its hanging ceramic eggs were made in Kutahya. The Armenian Museum nearby is open Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 to 16:00 and closed Sunday and Monday.
-
Late afternoon
Back to Jaffa Gate and the Tower of David
Return through the Armenian Quarter to Jaffa Gate, a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Western Wall by the Foundation's figure. The Tower of David museum sits beside the gate, open from April to December on Sunday 12:00 to 17:00, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to 20:00, and Friday and Saturday 9:00 to 15:00. Tickets cost ₪55 for adults, ₪35 for children and ₪44 for students, and the ticket office closes one hour before the museum. A museum ticket does not include the night shows.
With Only Half a Day
A half-day Jerusalem Old City itinerary drops the walls, the museums and the Armenian Quarter and keeps the core sights.
The Short Route
Start at the Temple Mount for the first visiting window, 7:30 to 11:00 in summer or 7:30 to 10:00 in winter, Sunday to Thursday only. Come down to the Western Wall plaza. Then walk through the Jewish Quarter and follow the Via Dolorosa, about 600 m end to end, to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Entry to the church is generally free and it opens from 5:00 in summer and 4:00 in winter.
If you would rather have someone else navigate, two short guided options cover the same ground. The Jerusalem Old City Half-Day Tour costs $39 per person for 3 hours with groups capped at 25. The Jerusalem Half Day Tour costs $50 per person with hotel pickup and entrance fees included, and it ends in the Old City around 13:00, so you plan your own way back.

A self-guided walking tour of Jerusalem's Old City can be close to free. The figures below come from the site operators and the Christian Information Center's holy places list.
Free and Low-Cost Sights
The Western Wall plaza is open all day, every day of the year. The two paid sights in this list cost ₪5 each. The Jaffa Gate tourist information centre at 1 Omer Ben el-Hatab St hands out free maps and brochures, which is useful before you start with the Jerusalem Old City map.
The full map of gates and quarters is in the guide to the gates of Jerusalem Old City.

Free Walking Tours
Free walking tours of the Old City run on tips, but availability changes and the main operator is currently paused.
Sandemans and the Current Status
Sandemans runs a tips-based free tour of Jerusalem from Jaffa Gate in English and Spanish, but its own page shows the tour as temporarily suspended. Do not plan a morning of your Jerusalem Old City itinerary around it until it returns. Times and days are not stated while the listing is suspended.
The Jaffa Gate tourist information centre, at 1 Omer Ben el-Hatab St, is the fallback. It is open Sunday to Thursday and Saturday 8:30 to 17:00 and Friday and holiday eves 8:30 to 13:30, and it gives free maps and brochures. The phone is +972-2-627-1422. The Christian Information Center, which faces the Tower of David Museum, provides mass times, tours and pilgrimage site guidance on +972-2-627-2692, open 9:00 to 16:00, Friday to 15:30, closed Saturday.
The Cheapest Paid Walk Instead
If the free option is suspended, the lowest-priced guided walk on this site is the Jerusalem Old City Half-Day Tour at $39 per person, 3 hours, meeting at the David Citadel Hotel, with groups capped at 25. The Jerusalem Old City Shabbat Tour costs $47 per person for 2.5 hours and ends at the Western Wall at sunset. The third is the 4-hour guided walking tour of the Old City at $57 per person, rated 4.8 across 414 reviews, which starts and ends at Jaffa Gate.
None of the three lists entry fees or food as included. Compare them with the full range of Old City Jerusalem tours on the homepage.

The Old City in the Evening
Evening options in the Old City include the Tower of David night shows and the ramparts.
Night Spectacular and Other Night Options
The Tower of David shows two night productions, KING DAVID and The Night Spectacular, each about 40 minutes outdoors. A night show costs ₪69 for adults on the museum price list, and a combined museum and night ticket is ₪108. The museum gives a 5% discount on night show tickets bought on its own website, and a VIP package adds a guide, balcony seating, a blanket and a glass of wine. A museum ticket does not include the shows. The city's tourism portal says the shows run twice a week, but the museum page lists no fixed nights, so confirm on the museum site. Both shows are wheelchair accessible. More detail is in the Tower of David Museum guide.
The Ramparts Walk operator advertises a JLM Lights night tour of the illuminated sites. In July and August the ramparts themselves stay open Sunday to Thursday until 21:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays only the southern section opens, 9:00 to 14:00. The Western Wall plaza stays open all day, every day of the year, so it is open after dark.
Old City Itinerary FAQ
Can you see the Jerusalem Old City in one day?
Yes. The walls enclose only 0.9 square kilometres, so a one-day Jerusalem Old City itinerary can cover the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Jewish Quarter, the Via Dolorosa, the Holy Sepulchre and the Armenian Quarter, as the one-day plan above shows.
What is the best order for a self-guided walking tour of Jerusalem's Old City?
Start at the Temple Mount because its non-Muslim windows are short, 7:30 to 11:00 and 13:30 to 14:30 in summer, Sunday to Thursday only, then go to the Western Wall and finish at the Holy Sepulchre. The full order is in the half-day route and the one-day plan.
How much does a day in the Old City cost?
The main holy sites are free, and the paid extras stay modest: ₪25 for the Ramparts Walk, ₪55 for the Tower of David museum and ₪40 for the Davidson Center. The free list is in what costs nothing.
Is there a free walking tour of Jerusalem's Old City?
Sandemans runs a tips-based free tour from Jaffa Gate in English and Spanish, but its page currently shows it as temporarily suspended. The alternatives, including the $39 half-day walk, are compared under free walking tours.
What time should I visit the Temple Mount?
Go at the opening of the first window, 7:30, because entry is not guaranteed and the site can close at any time. Hours and rules are set out in the Temple Mount guide.
Is a guided tour worth it for one day in the Old City?
It helps most for context and navigation on a first visit. The 4-hour Old City walking tour from Jaffa Gate costs $57 per person and covers many of the same sites as the self-guided plan, and the dual narrative tour adds two guides for $65 per person.
